How to Open SWF File in 2026: Play Flash Games & Animations

To open an SWF file today, play it with Ruffle, a free Flash Player emulator: drop it into the player below, or install the Ruffle app or browser extension. Adobe Flash Player stopped working in January 2021, so browsers can no longer open SWF files on their own. This guide shows how to open SWF files on Windows, Mac, Linux and phones, extract their images and sounds, and turn them into video.

Open SWF File Online: Play It & Extract Images and Sounds (Free)

Drop an .swf file below. The tool reads the file in your browser, shows what's inside (Flash version, size, frames, ActionScript 2 or 3), lists its images, sounds and texts for download, and plays it with the open-source Ruffle emulator.

Good to know: the player runs with networking switched off, so games that need their original website or an online server may stop at a loading screen. Ruffle plays most animations and many games, but not every ActionScript 3 game yet.

🔒 Nothing is uploaded — your file never leaves this device

What is an SWF file?

An SWF file is a compiled Adobe Flash file that contains an animation, game, banner or interactive app, ready to be played by Flash Player. It packs vector drawings, bitmap images, sounds, fonts, text and ActionScript code into one compact binary file. The format was created by FutureWave Software, bought by Macromedia and later owned by Adobe. The name originally stood for "ShockWave Flash"; it was later explained as "Small Web Format".

From the late 1990s to the early 2010s, SWF files powered browser games, cartoons, school lessons, website menus and ads. Many people still have them on old hard drives, CDs and game sites saved as "Save page as". An SWF is the finished, playable output; the editable source is a separate .fla file made in Flash or Adobe Animate.

What is inside an SWF file An SWF starts with a header: FWS, CWS or ZWS, the version, stage size, frame rate and frame count. Then comes a list of tags: shapes, bitmaps, sounds, fonts and texts, ActionScript code, and ShowFrame markers that build the timeline. Header FWS / CWS (zlib) / ZWS (LZMA) · version · size · fps · frames Tags (one after another) Shapes (vector) Bitmaps JPG/PNG Sounds (MP3…) Fonts & text ActionScript Movie clips ShowFrame · ShowFrame · ShowFrame … = the timeline

Why SWF files don't open anymore

Browsers used to play SWF files through the Adobe Flash Player plugin. Adobe retired it, and every major browser removed plugin support:

DateWhat happened
December 31, 2020Adobe stopped supporting Flash Player
January 12, 2021Adobe blocked Flash content from running in Flash Player
TodayAdobe strongly recommends uninstalling Flash Player; browsers can't run SWF files without an emulator

So when you double-click an SWF file, Windows asks which app to use, and Chrome or Edge just downloads it again. The fix isn't the old plugin. It's an emulator that runs Flash content safely inside modern browsers and apps, and the most complete free one is Ruffle.

Avoid "Flash Player download" sites. Adobe no longer distributes Flash Player. Installers offered on third-party sites are outdated at best and bundled with adware or malware at worst.

How to open an SWF file: quick answer

  1. Fastest: drop the file into the player at the top of this page and press Play. Works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook and phones.
  2. Use it often? Download the free Ruffle desktop app from ruffle.rs and open your SWF files with it.
  3. SWF on a website? Install the Ruffle extension for Chrome, Edge or Firefox; Flash content on old sites starts playing again.
  4. Old game won't work? Look it up in Flashpoint Archive, which preserves over 200,000 web games and animations.

Open SWF files on Windows 11 and 10

  1. Go to ruffle.rs > Downloads and get the Windows desktop build (64-bit for almost every PC). It comes as a .zip file.
  2. Right-click the .zip and choose Extract All. No installation is needed.
  3. Run ruffle.exe and choose your SWF, or drag the SWF file onto ruffle.exe.
  4. To make SWF files open with Ruffle on double-click: right-click an SWF > Open with > Choose another app > find ruffle.exe > Always.
Illustration: after you point Windows to ruffle.exe once, choose "Always" so SWF files open with a double-click.

If Windows SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC" the first time, the app is new to Microsoft's reputation system. Download Ruffle only from ruffle.rs or its GitHub releases page, then click More info > Run anyway.

Open an SWF file on Mac

  1. Download the macOS desktop build of Ruffle from ruffle.rs (a universal build for Apple silicon and Intel Macs).
  2. Double-click the downloaded archive to unpack it and move Ruffle to your Applications folder.
  3. Open Ruffle and choose the SWF. If macOS blocks the app the first time, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

Safari has no Flash support. The online player on this page works in Safari, and Ruffle also offers a Safari extension build.

Play SWF files on Linux

Install Ruffle from Flathub (flatpak install flathub rs.ruffle.Ruffle) or download the x86_64 or ARM64 build from ruffle.rs. Then run Ruffle and open the file. The online player above also works in Firefox and Chromium on Linux and on Chromebooks.

Open SWF files in Chrome, Edge and Firefox

Modern browsers no longer play Flash, and opening a local .swf usually just triggers another download. You have two options:

  • Single file: use the player on this page. It doesn't upload anything.
  • Old websites: install the Ruffle extension from the Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Edge Add-ons or Firefox Add-ons. It replaces Flash embeds on web pages with Ruffle automatically.

Open an SWF file on iPhone or Android

Neither iOS nor Android has ever had a Flash app you can still install, but the Ruffle web player runs in mobile browsers. Save the SWF to Files (iPhone) or Downloads (Android), open this page in Safari or Chrome and choose the file in the player. Animations and click-based games work best; games that need a keyboard are hard to play on a touch screen, so a computer is the better choice for those.

Play old Flash games

Many classic games were split into several files, loaded data from their original website, or refused to run on other domains ("site-locking"). A single SWF in an emulator may stop at a loading bar for those. Your options:

  • Flashpoint Archive — a non-profit preservation project with over 200,000 games and animations. Its launcher includes a proxy that serves files as if the original site were still online, which fixes most site-locked and multi-file games.
  • Ruffle desktop — best for single-file games you already have.
  • Online player above — quick test to see whether a game uses ActionScript 2 or 3 and whether it runs.

Ruffle's own compatibility page reports about 99% of the ActionScript 1/2 language and 90% of the ActionScript 3 language implemented, so older games (roughly before 2008) usually run better than late AS3 games.

Extract images, sounds and code from an SWF

The tool above lists every bitmap image (JPEG, PNG, GIF and lossless bitmaps saved as PNG), every MP3 sound effect, the MP3 soundtrack streamed with the timeline, and the text of editable text fields. Each one has a download link.

For anything more, use JPEXS Free Flash Decompiler (free, open source under GPL-3.0, runs on Windows, Mac and Linux with Java). It can export shapes, sprites, fonts, sounds and ActionScript code, replace images, sounds and texts, and convert an SWF back to an FLA project.

Convert SWF to MP4

An SWF isn't a video: its frames are drawn live and can react to the mouse or keyboard, which is why normal video converters fail or produce a black screen. The dependable way is to record it while it plays:

  1. Open the SWF in Ruffle (desktop app or the player above) and resize the window to the size you want.
  2. Start a screen recorder: OBS Studio (free, Windows/Mac/Linux), the Windows Snipping Tool video mode or Xbox Game Bar (Win + G), or Shift-Command-5 on a Mac.
  3. Play the animation from the start and stop recording at the end. Trim the result in any video editor.

Need just the music? The soundtrack download gives you the original MP3 without recording.

Can you edit an SWF file?

Not directly in Adobe Animate: an SWF is the compiled output, like an .exe compared to its source code. If you have the original .fla, open that in Adobe Animate and publish again. If you only have the SWF, JPEXS can replace images, sounds and texts, edit ActionScript, and export an FLA you can continue working on, though complex files may need clean-up.

Is it safe to open an SWF file?

The Flash Player plugin was a major security risk, which is one reason it was retired. Ruffle is a different program: it's written in Rust, and the web version runs inside your browser's sandbox like any other web page. The player on this page also blocks the SWF from making network requests or opening links.

  • Don't install "Flash Player" from download sites or old installers.
  • An .swf.exe or .exe "Flash game" is a Windows program, not an SWF; only run it if you trust its source. The tool above can pull the SWF out of a Flash projector .exe without running it.
  • Files from unknown sources can still show misleading content, such as fake prize pop-ups. Don't type passwords into anything an SWF shows you.

SWF problems and fixes

The game stops at a loading screen or shows an error

It probably needs its original website, extra files or an online server. Try the same title in Flashpoint Archive. If the tool shows "ActionScript 3", the game may also use a feature Ruffle doesn't support yet; check Ruffle's nightly builds, which add fixes almost daily.

"Not an SWF file" or nothing happens

Drop it into the tool to see what it really is. Common cases: an FLV video renamed to .swf (open it with VLC), an HTML page saved instead of the game, or an incomplete download.

The file is called .swf.part or .crdownload

The download didn't finish. Download it again; see our CRDOWNLOAD guide.

No sound

Browsers mute pages until you interact. Click the player once. Some old sounds use Nellymoser or ADPCM encoding, which Ruffle supports but this page can't export.

The picture is tiny or blurry

Right-click the Ruffle player for full screen and quality options, or enlarge the desktop app's window. Vector content stays sharp at any size.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open an SWF file without Flash Player?

Use Ruffle, a free and open-source Flash Player emulator. Drop the file into the player on this page, or download the Ruffle desktop app for Windows, Mac or Linux from ruffle.rs and open the SWF with it. You don't need, and shouldn't install, the old Adobe Flash Player.

Can I still play SWF files in 2026?

Yes. Adobe's Flash Player is gone, but Ruffle plays most Flash animations and many games in modern browsers and as a desktop app. For classic games that need extra files or their original website, Flashpoint Archive preserves more than 200,000 games and animations.

Why won't my SWF file open?

Windows, macOS and current browsers have no built-in Flash support since Adobe blocked Flash Player in January 2021. Open the file with Ruffle instead. If Ruffle also fails, the file may be incomplete, not really an SWF, or a game that needs its original website or server.

How do I open SWF files on Windows 10 or 11?

Download the Windows build of Ruffle from ruffle.rs, extract the ZIP and run ruffle.exe, then choose your SWF. To open SWF files by double-clicking, right-click one, choose Open with, Choose another app, select ruffle.exe and click Always.

Can I open an SWF file on iPhone or Android?

There is no Flash app for phones, but the Ruffle web player works in mobile browsers. Open this page in Safari or Chrome and choose the SWF in the player. Animations and simple click games work; games that need a keyboard are much easier on a computer.

How do I convert SWF to MP4?

Play the SWF in Ruffle and record the screen with OBS Studio, Snipping Tool or Xbox Game Bar on Windows, or Shift-Command-5 on a Mac. SWF files are drawn live and can be interactive, so ordinary video converters usually fail or give a black screen.

How can I extract images or music from an SWF file?

Drop the file into the tool on this page and open the Images, sounds and text tab: it lists embedded JPEG, PNG and GIF images, lossless bitmaps and MP3 sounds with download links. For vector shapes, other sound formats and code, use JPEXS Free Flash Decompiler.

Can I edit an SWF file in Adobe Animate?

Adobe Animate edits .fla source files, not compiled SWF files. If you have the original .fla, open that and publish a new SWF. If you only have the SWF, JPEXS Free Flash Decompiler can replace images, sounds and text and export an FLA project.

Is it safe to open SWF files?

With Ruffle, yes for normal use: it runs Flash content inside the browser sandbox or as a modern app, and this page's player blocks network access. Don't install old Flash Player versions from download sites, and be careful with .exe files that claim to be Flash games.

What is the difference between SWF and FLA?

FLA is the editable project file created in Flash or Adobe Animate, with layers, library items and source code. SWF is the compiled, compressed file produced when the project is published. Players open SWF files; only Animate opens FLA files.

Does Ruffle support ActionScript 3 games?

Yes, partly. Ruffle's compatibility page lists about 90% of the ActionScript 3 language and 82% of its API as implemented, against roughly 99% of the ActionScript 1 and 2 language. Most older games work; some newer AS3 games may still fail.
