How to Open an OXPS File
To open an OXPS file on Windows, use XPS Viewer. If it is missing, install the optional XPS Viewer feature first. To share the document with a Mac, phone or PDF reader, open it in XPS Viewer and print a PDF copy.
Choose what you need
Open an OXPS file on Windows 11
- Search Windows Settings for Optional features.
- Choose the option to add or view available features, search for XPS Viewer, select it and install it. You may need administrator permission.
- Launch XPS Viewer from Start, choose File → Open, and select the OXPS document.
- If another app opens instead, right-click the file and use Open with to select XPS Viewer.
Settings labels and feature availability can differ between Windows releases and managed PCs. If the feature is unavailable on a work computer, ask IT to install it or request a PDF from the sender.
Install XPS Viewer with an administrator command
For an administrator managing a Windows installation, Microsoft identifies the optional capability as XPS.Viewer~~~~0.0.1.0. In an elevated PowerShell session:
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name XPS.Viewer~~~~0.0.1.0This installs the Windows feature; it does not convert the document. Installation depends on access to a permitted feature source. On managed devices, follow your organization’s software policy rather than changing update settings to bypass it.
Convert an OXPS file to PDF
- Open the file in XPS Viewer and confirm the pages display correctly.
- Choose File → Print.
- Select Microsoft Print to PDF if that printer is available.
- Print, choose a filename, then open the saved PDF and check page count and layout.
Printing creates a new document. It is not a way to preserve an original digital signature or guarantee the same accessibility structure. Keep the OXPS when those properties matter.
Open OXPS on Mac, iPhone or Android
The simplest sharing route is to request a PDF from the person who created the document. If you already have access to Windows, create the PDF there and transfer it to your other device. Before using a third-party viewer, check that it explicitly supports OXPS, not only the older XPS format.
This page does not upload, render or convert your document. For confidential documents, establish how a third-party service handles files before submitting them.
OXPS will not open: avoid these mistakes
- No associated app: install or select XPS Viewer; this alone is not evidence of corruption.
- Older XPS software rejects it: use software with explicit OpenXPS support.
- Renaming to .pdf or .xps fails: restore the original extension and use a real conversion route.
- Viewer installed but file still fails: download another copy or ask the sender to export a PDF from the source application.
