How to Open an AVI File

Open an AVI video with VLC on a supported device. AVI is a container, so playback depends on the video and audio codecs inside it; a recognized extension alone does not guarantee that every player can decode the file.

Choose what you need

Play an AVI on Windows, Mac or Linux

  1. Install VLC from VideoLAN’s official website or use an existing compatible player.
  2. In VLC, choose Media → Open File on Windows or Linux, or File → Open File on Mac.
  3. Select the AVI and check both picture and sound.
  4. If double-clicking opens the wrong app, use your operating system’s Open with menu.

On mobile, use a compatible media app and open the saved local file through the device’s file-sharing controls. Menu names differ between desktop and mobile editions.

AVI has sound but no picture, or will not play

Sound without video can indicate an unsupported video decoder or a rendering problem. Try a current compatible player before concluding that the file is damaged. If only one AVI fails while others work, obtain another copy or compare it with the original.

A zero-byte file contains no video to recover. If the file stops at the same point in several players, check whether the download completed. Do not assume that renaming a partial download repairs missing data.

Convert AVI when a device needs another format

Use a video converter with explicit support for the source codecs and choose output settings your destination device supports. Conversion may re-encode the video and reduce quality. Check the full output, including audio synchronization, before deleting the original.

Changing .avi to .mp4 does not rebuild the container. This page supplies playback guidance; it does not convert uploaded videos.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my AVI play audio only?

The player may not support its video codec, or video rendering may fail. Try a compatible updated player and compare with another copy before assuming corruption.

Can I rename AVI to MP4?

No. Use a real video conversion or remuxing workflow; changing the extension does not change the container.
