How to Open an MKV File

Open an MKV video in VLC or another Matroska-compatible player. MKV can hold video, multiple audio tracks and subtitles, so select the desired tracks rather than assuming that missing sound or captions mean the file is damaged.

Choose what you need

Play MKV and select audio or subtitles

  1. Open the local MKV in a compatible player such as VLC.
  2. Choose the desired audio track from the player’s audio menu.
  3. Select an included subtitle track, or load a matching external subtitle if you have one.
  4. Check playback beyond the opening scene, particularly after seeking.

Matroska defines MKV for files containing a video track, with optional audio and subtitle tracks. The codecs inside still determine what a particular device can decode.

MKV has no sound, no subtitles or choppy playback

Check whether an alternate audio track is selected and whether the player supports its codec. For subtitles, distinguish an absent subtitle track from one that is present but disabled. If playback stutters, test the same file in another compatible player and compare with a lower-resolution video.

If the file stops at the same point in several players, check its download and original source. A partial file may contain enough data to start but not enough to finish.

MKV to another container or device

Remuxing changes the container while retaining compatible encoded streams; transcoding changes their encoding and may reduce quality. A destination that lacks the original video or audio decoder may need transcoding rather than a container-only change.

Renaming MKV to MP4 does neither. Confirm that all needed audio and subtitle tracks survive the selected workflow. This page does not upload or convert videos.

Frequently asked questions

Does MKV always have subtitles?

No. The container can hold subtitle tracks, but an individual file may have none.

Is renaming MKV to MP4 enough?

No. Use an appropriate remuxing or transcoding workflow depending on the destination’s codec support.
