How to Open an APP File

For a macOS APP bundle, open it on a supported Mac through Finder. An APP is normally a package containing the program and resources; copying or renaming it to EXE does not make it a Windows application.

Choose what you need

Open an APP on macOS

Use the application’s official distribution and follow its installation instructions. If supplied inside a DMG, mount the image and copy the application as instructed by the developer. Launch the APP from Applications or its supported location.

If macOS refuses it, check the source, signing information and supported system version. Do not treat bypassing a warning as a general file-opening solution.

View the contents without launching the app

Control-click the APP in Finder and select Show Package Contents. A typical bundle contains Contents and an Info.plist. Apple documents inspecting Info.plist for its bundle identifier. Preserve the hierarchy; moving or editing internal resources can stop the app working.

APP on Windows or an unrelated application format

Windows cannot run a native macOS application simply by associating the APP extension. Obtain a Windows build from the publisher. If your APP is a single file from another development tool, establish its producer rather than applying macOS bundle instructions.

A ZIP extraction that loses bundle metadata or required companion files may produce an incomplete application. Request the original supported package when the contents do not match the expected Mac bundle.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Mac APP a file or folder?

Finder presents the application as a package, but its bundle normally contains a directory hierarchy with code and resources.

Can Windows open a Mac APP?

It may inspect copied contents, but it cannot run the native Mac app merely by changing the extension. Obtain a Windows build.
