How to Open an MSI File
Open a trusted MSI on Windows with Windows Installer. An MSI is an installation package; installing it changes the system, so identify the publisher and purpose before starting the installer.
Choose what you need
Install a trusted MSI package
Launch the MSI in File Explorer and follow its installer. For a documented command-line workflow, Microsoft supports msiexec.exe /i "C:\path\package.msi". This installs the package; it is not a read-only preview. Use only the options required by the publisher.
MSI will not install
Record the actual installer error. Check that the download is complete, its architecture and Windows version are supported, and its required permissions are available. An already-running installation or a missing dependency can require a different fix from a damaged package.
On managed computers, ask IT to approve the supported installation. Do not use silent or elevated options merely to avoid understanding an error.
Extracting files and other operating systems
Package-aware utilities may inspect tables or extract included files, but extraction is not the same as installing the application correctly. Custom actions, configuration and dependencies can be needed. Do not assume that an extracted EXE is a complete portable app.
macOS and Android do not natively install Windows MSI packages. Obtain the publisher’s appropriate platform version instead of renaming MSI to DMG or APK.
Frequently asked questions
Is MSI the same as EXE?
No. MSI is a Windows Installer package, while EXE is executable code. An EXE installer can sometimes launch an MSI.
Can I install MSI on a Mac by renaming it?
No. Obtain a supported Mac build or use an appropriate Windows environment for the specific application.
