How to Open an AAB File

An AAB is an Android publishing bundle, not a directly installable APK. To test it, use Android Studio or bundletool to generate a suitable APK set, then install that set on the intended Android device.

Generate APKs from an AAB

Android’s bundletool can create an APK set with bundletool build-apks --bundle=app.aab --output=app.apks. Use the appropriate Java invocation for your installed bundletool package and provide the intended signing configuration. The result is an APKS archive, not a converted Windows executable.

For device testing, follow bundletool’s install-apks workflow or the Android Studio process for your project. An app bundle may contain configurations or modules that affect the generated APKs.

Why an AAB is different from an APK

The bundle provides compiled application code and resources for generation and delivery. Android app stores can generate optimized APKs for device configurations; an APK is the package installed on Android. Renaming AAB to APK does not produce the needed installed-package structure.

Signing and incomplete APK sets

If installation fails, confirm the package signing identity, device configuration and presence of required split APKs. A base APK alone may not be a complete installation. Keep the original bundle and generation settings so you can reproduce the set.

For ordinary users, obtain the developer’s supported installable package or store version. This guide does not build or sign uploaded bundles.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install an AAB by tapping it?

Not as a normal APK. Use a supported bundle-testing or distribution workflow to generate and install the required APK set.

Is APKS the same as APK?

No. APKS is an archive holding a generated APK set. Installation must account for the required device-specific packages.
