How to Open a TMF File
For a Windows Trace Message Format TMF, open it in a text editor to inspect formatting metadata, or use it with Tracefmt or TraceView to decode matching trace messages. The TMF is not itself the recorded event log.
Choose what you need
Read a Windows TMF as structured text
Open a copy in Notepad or a code editor. Microsoft describes TMF as formatting instructions for binary messages generated by a trace provider. It can identify message definitions and the symbol information from which those instructions were obtained.
Confirm that the file came from a Windows tracing workflow. If it belongs to a different application, follow that application’s format documentation rather than assuming it is an ETW/WPP file.
Use TMF with the corresponding trace data
Tracefmt and TraceView can use suitable TMF information to format messages. Keep the trace data, the relevant TMF files and the provider/build information together. A TMF that does not match the provider’s messages can leave output unformatted or unusable.
When you need formatting information from symbols, Microsoft documents Tracepdb as a way to generate TMF files from the appropriate PDB. Use the tool’s documented arguments for your trace workflow rather than guessing from the filename.
No format information found and conversion questions
Check whether the formatting files correspond to the recorded provider and whether your tracing tool is searching their actual directory. Not every modern tracing provider uses this legacy format. Obtain the correct files from the software or driver developer when they are missing.
Renaming TMF to TXT may change the default editor association but does not produce decoded event records. Preserve the TMF if you need to reproduce the analysis later; it complements the trace instead of replacing it.
Frequently asked questions
Is a TMF the trace log?
For Windows WPP tracing, a TMF contains formatting instructions. It is used with the corresponding trace messages rather than being the event recording itself.
What opens a Windows TMF?
A text editor can inspect its structured text. Tracefmt and TraceView use matching formatting information when displaying trace messages.
