How to Open QBO File: Import to QuickBooks or View in Excel
A QBO file is a bank or credit card statement in QuickBooks Web Connect format, downloaded from your bank's "QuickBooks" export option. QuickBooks Desktop imports it with File > Utilities > Import > Web Connect Files, and QuickBooks Online uploads it from Bank transactions. To read it without QuickBooks, the free viewer below lists every transaction and balance and converts the file to Excel or CSV, in your browser.

Drop a .qbo Web Connect file below. The viewer shows the bank and its Intuit bank ID, the account, period, balances and every transaction, and exports them to Excel, CSV or the 3-column CSV that QuickBooks Online accepts. It also flags duplicate transaction IDs and other problems that make QuickBooks skip or reject a download.
Good to know: this reads bank statement downloads (.qbo), not QuickBooks company files (.qbw). Everything happens on your device.

What is a QBO file?
A .qbo file is a QuickBooks Web Connect download: an OFX bank statement with an Intuit bank ID (<INTU.BID>) that tells QuickBooks which bank it came from. It holds the account, the statement period, the ending balance and every transaction with a unique ID that QuickBooks uses to avoid importing the same transaction twice.
Don't confuse it with "QBO" as short for QuickBooks Online, the web version of QuickBooks. A .qbo file is just a statement download; it doesn't contain your books, customers or invoices.
| Full name | QuickBooks Web Connect file |
|---|---|
| Format | OFX (SGML or XML) with INTU.BID |
| Contains | One bank or credit card statement |
| Imports into | QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online |
| Related | .ofx, .qfx (Quicken), .iif, .qbw (company file) |
How to open a QBO file: quick answer
| What you want | Use |
|---|---|
| QuickBooks Desktop (Windows) | File > Utilities > Import > Web Connect Files |
| QuickBooks Desktop for Mac | File > Import > From Web Connect |
| QuickBooks Online | Bank transactions > Link account > Upload from file |
| Read it or put it in Excel | The viewer above > Download Excel or CSV |

Import a QBO file into QuickBooks Desktop
- Open your company file and make a backup first (File > Back Up Company).
- On Windows choose File > Utilities > Import > Web Connect Files; on Mac choose File > Import > From Web Connect.
- Select the .qbo file.
- Choose Use an existing QuickBooks account and pick the matching bank or credit card account (or create a new one), then continue.
- Open the Bank Feeds Center to review, match and add the downloaded transactions.
Upload a QBO file to QuickBooks Online
- Go to Bank transactions (Transactions or Accounting menu).
- Select the account tile, then Link account > Upload from file. If the account isn't connected to online banking, choose Upload transactions.
- Choose the .qbo file, select the QuickBooks account and continue.
- Pick the transactions to import and confirm, then categorize them in the For review tab.
Intuit lists QBO as the preferred upload format; files must be 350 KB or less, with up to about 1,000 transactions per upload. For a longer period, download several shorter files.
Open a QBO file in Excel
Excel doesn't understand the OFX tags inside a QBO file. Drop the file into the viewer at the top of this page and click Download Excel (.xlsx) or Download CSV. You also get a CSV for QuickBooks Online upload in the 3-column layout (Date, Description, Amount) that QuickBooks Online accepts, handy when a QBO upload fails.
QBO files vs QuickBooks company files
| Extension | What it is |
|---|---|
| .qbo | Bank statement download (Web Connect) |
| .qbw | QuickBooks Desktop company file (your books) |
| .qbb | QuickBooks Desktop backup |
| .qbm | QuickBooks portable company file |
| .qbx / .qby | Accountant's copy and its returned changes |
| .iif | Import file for lists and transactions (IIF guide) |
If someone sent you a .qbo expecting it to contain their bookkeeping, they probably meant a .qbw, .qbb or .qbm file, or an invitation to their QuickBooks Online company.
QBO problems and fixes
QuickBooks can't verify the financial institution
QuickBooks Desktop checks the bank ID (INTU.BID) in the file. The viewer shows it; if it's missing or unknown, the file wasn't made for QuickBooks (for example a renamed OFX or QFX). Download the QuickBooks option from the bank again, or upload the CSV to QuickBooks Online.
Transactions are skipped
Each transaction has an ID (FITID). If it was imported before, or the bank repeats IDs, QuickBooks skips it. The viewer flags duplicates.
"The file is too large" in QuickBooks Online
Uploads are limited to 350 KB. Download a shorter date range.
Wrong account or currency
Pick the right account during import, and make sure its currency matches the file's currency, which the viewer shows. A mismatch can stop the import or put transactions in the wrong account.
The bank only offers PDF statements
PDFs aren't importable. Ask the bank for QBO, OFX or CSV, or type the transactions in.

Frequently asked questions
How do I open a QBO file?
In QuickBooks Desktop for Windows choose File > Utilities > Import > Web Connect Files; in QuickBooks Online use Bank transactions > Upload from file. To read it without QuickBooks, drop it into the viewer on this page.
Is a QBO file my QuickBooks company file?
No. A .qbo file is a bank statement download (Web Connect). QuickBooks Desktop company files end in .qbw, backups in .qbb and portable copies in .qbm.
How do I convert a QBO file to Excel?
Open it in the viewer on this page and click Download Excel (.xlsx) or Download CSV. The viewer also creates a 3-column CSV for QuickBooks Online uploads.
Why does QuickBooks say it can't verify the financial institution?
The bank ID (INTU.BID) in the file is missing or unknown to QuickBooks, often because the file was renamed from OFX or QFX. Download the QuickBooks option from your bank again, or upload a CSV to QuickBooks Online.
Can I import a QBO file into QuickBooks Online?
Yes. Go to Bank transactions, choose the account, then Link account > Upload from file. Intuit recommends QBO files, up to 350 KB per upload.
Can Quicken open QBO files?
No. Quicken for Windows imports QFX Web Connect files. Download the Quicken format from your bank, or convert the QBO to CSV with the viewer on this page.
Why were some transactions skipped?
QuickBooks skips transactions whose ID (FITID) it has already imported. The viewer on this page flags duplicate IDs in the file.
Is it safe to open a QBO file online?
Only with a tool that doesn't upload it. The viewer on this page reads the file in your browser, so your account data stays on your device.
