How to Open an INI File
Open an INI file in a plain-text editor to inspect it, then use the originating application’s documented settings format before making changes. A configuration file is not usually a document to convert or a program to execute.
Choose what you need
Read a INI file without changing settings
Copy the file first and open the copy with Notepad, VS Code or another plain-text editor. Preserve its filename, encoding and line endings. If the text is unreadable, do not save over it; establish whether the application uses a binary or encoded variant.
Configuration files may contain account names, paths or secrets. Redact those before sharing a diagnostic example.
Edit only the format and keys the app supports
INI commonly organizes key-value settings into named sections; dialects differ between parsers. CFG is a generic configuration suffix, not a single syntax: it may contain similar settings, JSON, XML or another application format.
Close the application if its documentation requires it, back up the original and change one relevant setting at a time. A setting accepted by one program may be meaningless to another.
Changes are ignored or the app no longer starts
Confirm the application is reading that exact file and not a different profile or generated configuration. Check syntax and spelling against its documentation. If the change caused a failure, restore the saved original and restart through the app’s supported procedure.
Do not delete a configuration simply because its extension looks unfamiliar. Reset behavior varies by application and may discard custom settings.
