How to Open a GBA File

Open a GBA game image with a compatible Game Boy Advance emulator, such as mGBA. The file is a game cartridge image, not a video, PDF or Windows application.

Choose what you need

Load a GBA file in an emulator

  1. Obtain mGBA from its official project distribution and install or launch the build for your system.
  2. Keep a copy of the original game image.
  3. Use the emulator’s file-opening or ROM-loading command and select the GBA file.
  4. Configure input controls and test that the title starts.

If your file is inside a ZIP archive and your selected emulator does not load it directly, extract the actual game image first. Do not rename the ZIP to .gba.

GBA will not load or shows a blank screen

Confirm that the emulator supports the correct console. Check whether the file is complete and whether a known-good permitted game image loads in the same application. A compatibility problem with one image does not establish that the emulator installation is broken.

A save file, save state or patch is not the full game image. If the package contains only a patch, follow the patch project’s instructions for its required base image and verify the result rather than changing its extension.

Keep game images and saves separate

The .gba file is the game input. Your emulator may store progress and save states separately. Copy those files as well when migrating to another computer, and check the target emulator’s save-format compatibility before replacing existing saves.

Use game images you are entitled to use. This page does not distribute games or emulate them in your browser. To inspect cartridge contents or create software, use tools designed for the relevant console.

Frequently asked questions

Is a GBA file a game or a save?

A .gba file normally holds the cartridge game image. Progress files and emulator save states are separate and depend on the emulator.

Can I rename GBA to another console format?

No. Changing an extension does not translate a game to different console hardware.
