How to Open an ASC File
Open an ASC file in a text editor first to identify its contents. An ASC may be plain text, an ASCII-armored OpenPGP message or key, or a GIS ASCII raster; each needs a different next step.
Choose what you need
Identify plain text, OpenPGP or GIS data
Open a copy in Notepad, VS Code or another text editor. A header beginning -----BEGIN PGP points to OpenPGP. A grid header with entries such as ncols, nrows and cellsize suggests an ASCII raster. Readable prose or columns may simply be a text export.
The extension alone does not establish which format you have. Preserve line breaks and do not save over the file just to inspect it.
Open an ASC key, signature or encrypted message
Use GnuPG or a compatible OpenPGP application. A public key can be imported with gpg --import public-key.asc; verify its fingerprint independently before trusting it. A protected message requires the appropriate private key or passphrase. For example, gpg --output recovered.txt --decrypt message.asc writes decrypted output when your credentials permit it.
A detached signature is verified against the original file; it is not the original document. Do not publish or upload a private key.
Open an ASC raster or text export
For a confirmed Arc/Info ASCII Grid, use a GIS reader supporting GDAL’s AAIGrid driver, such as QGIS. Keep an accompanying PRJ file with the raster, and confirm its coordinate system before interpreting locations. For ordinary delimited text, import it into a spreadsheet and select the delimiter rather than treating it as a map.
Renaming ASC to JPG or PDF does not produce an image or a decrypted document.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open ASC in Notepad?
You can inspect text-based ASC files in a text editor. Encrypted OpenPGP contents still require decryption, and GIS grids need a GIS application for map display.
Is an ASC file a PGP key?
It may be, but ASC is used by multiple formats. Inspect the header and identify whether it is a key, message, signature, raster or other text export.
