How to Open an ABW File
Open an ABW document with AbiWord or LibreOffice Writer. To share it with a PDF or Word user, open it in a compatible word processor and export a PDF or save a DOCX copy, checking the layout afterward.
Choose what you need
Open ABW on Windows, Mac or Linux
- Install LibreOffice from its official distribution, or use an existing AbiWord installation.
- Choose File → Open and select the ABW document.
- Check paragraphs, tables, images and page breaks before editing.
- Save edits to a new filename so the original remains available.
LibreOffice lists ABW and compressed ZABW among its supported text-document formats. Compatibility with a particular document still depends on its contents and software version.
Convert ABW to PDF or DOCX
In LibreOffice Writer, use Export as PDF for a reading or printing copy. Use Save As and select the Word DOCX format when the recipient needs an editable document. AbiWord’s own File menu also offers Save As and Export workflows.
Inspect the exported document separately, especially where a different font has been substituted. A PDF preserves a page-oriented copy; it does not preserve all word-processing editability.
ABW will not open or looks like XML
ABW can contain XML markup. A text editor may expose text and tags, but it will not reproduce a word processor’s layout. If the file appears empty, check its size and get another copy from the sender. If a reader reports an import error, try another supported application and preserve the original for recovery.
Renaming to DOCX does not create the ZIP-based structure a DOCX reader expects.
