The files are generally found in the hidden folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\ {username}\Contacts and are likely to be a sequence of files which will be having scrambled names for all the contacts within the windows live messenger's contact list. In case these files are lost it will be very difficult to be able to recover these files and so it is recommended that you should backup these files periodically from time to time by exporting your contact list from the windows live messenger to a .CTT file and save it in the desired location that you want to save in so that in case there is a mishap and you happen to lose all your contacts in your contact list you can then later import that .CTT file from the location to which you saved the file and all the contacts in your contact list will be restored.
