Win is a file-based image format which was introduced within the Windows Vista Operating System for the first time. It allows for a single disk image file to be deployed over to multiple computer systems and to even different platforms very easily. The critical files such as the device drivers, the updates, and the components can be managed by the file without the need to boot the operating system image. WIM images can often contain multiple disc images which can also be mounted over as new volumes and browsed just like any other physical disc on windows. These WIM images are also made bootable which implies that in the even the computer is restarted and the computer can boot using the WIM image and boot that operating system.
