About the VIF file type:

VIF Files are associated with Khoros Visualizations Image files. VIF files are the native bitmap image or graphics files format which are used by the Khoros System environment which have been implemented using the X Window System for the Linux platform. The VIFF or VIF file format specificaition with all the other documents that are related to the format can be found on the Khoros distribution site as well as the distribution itself after having installed it on your system. You may find the specification in the first chapter of the volume II of the programmer's manual that is available along with the distribution and is usually found in the src/file_formats directory also along with that the viff.h file is very helpful in understanding it.
