TGA files are bitmap image file format that was developed originally in the year 1984 by TrueVision which is now better known as Pinnacle Systems. It was developed by them to be used with their initial video products. Later in the year 1989 TrueVision introduced several new extensions to the TGA file for accommodating the increasing needs of the graphics industry professionals to be able to have very high definition graphics. Some of the examples of the extensions which were added to the TGA format are Alpha channel type, Pixel aspect ratio, Gamma value, Author name and comments, Data and time the file was created as well as a scaled-down postage stamp copy of the large image as a thumbnail image.
