The SID file extension is used as the compressed image format. This file format uses the MrSID or the Multi-resolution Seamless Image Database compression. It was developed by the company LizardTech to compress large image files and to encode geo-referenced raster graphics, like orthophotos. The MrSID application is a wavelet-based, patented file format developed to allow the portability of raster or massive bit-mapped images. The SID file format also utilizes DWT or the discrete wavelet transformations in an ideal fashion on the image data tile subsets. It also stores and keeps the wavelet coefficients in the data structure, supporting the efficient retrieval of the pieces of data in order to generate the specified rectangular zone of the said image at the selected spatial resolution.
