The SHN file extension is used for the audio files compressed with the Shorten lossless compression method. This file format has been optimized for audio data compression. It compresses audio with the CD quality without losing its quality. This is similar to the FLAC and APE compression. However, Shorten compression is no longer developed. This is because more mature and more efficient lossless audio codecs, such as MPEG-4 ALS, FLAC, TTA, APE (Monkey's Audio), and WV ( WavPack) have become more commonly used. Nevertheless, the SHN file extension remains a common file extension and file format because of the large number concert recordings legally traded in circulation. These recordings are encoded with the SHN file extension. The SHN files, moreover, may be transcoded using a more effective and newer codecs without any loss.
