The RBF file extension is used for the backup set that contains pieces of data backed up using the Restrospect backup application. This backup set contains the actual files and folders from the said application. This may also be restored and recovered based on the pieces of information saved within the RBS backup catalog file. The Restrospect backup application was developed previously by Dantz software. However, presently, the application is now fully owned and marketed by EMC Insignia.

The RBF file extension is also used for the Rollback file of Microsoft. These files, as well as the config.msi folder, are utilized for the Windows Installer rollback process. The RBS files are often stored in this folder located on the drive where the platform is installed. They may also be stored on the drive where the backed up application resides. This is done so that no crossing of drives will occur during the backup process of the application files.
