If Windows cannot find the appropriate program associated with .PRN files, then your registry may have errors. Check your Windows registry for errors (includes file association errors).

The PRN file extension is used in the PRN files created by selecting the Print to File option in the Print Dialog Box. These files contain printable texts and other contents. The files may also include printer instructions such as the printer tray to use as well as the number of pages to print. The PRN files are also similar to PostScript (PS) files.

The PRN files are also printable in MAC OS X. This may be done by dragging the files to the printer icon found in the desktop. In Windows, the PRN files may be printed simply by right clicking the files and choosing the Microsoft Office Document Imaging. The files may also be opened through the command line of Windows.
