MOD files are commonly used as a standard music module format that is recognized by most modern audio players and tracking applications. These files can be created using FastTrack, Noise Tracker, StarTrekker or other MOD creation applications. MOD files generally contain information for the completion of the songs melody, similar to a MIDI file and it also has sound sample which can be used for different instruments. These sound samples are typically assigned to various different tracks in the modules and are then played back from them. MOD files also adds additional features as well as functionality to the ArchiCAD design program that is used to design architectural designs. It may also be included with the application supplied by the vendor of the application itself. MOD files can also be the output of compiled programs written using the Fortran Programming Language. These files are usually created for each of the module declarations which are declared within the Fortran program source code and it groups the procedures and data that are related to each other in one single file which can then be easily referenced by other programs.

The Fortran MOD files aren't supposed to be opened manually but only referenced from other Fortran programs. MOD files can also be video files that were captured using the JVC EVERIO camcorder. The camcorder uses MPEG2-PS encoding format for the captured videos and Dolby Digital AC-3 encoding for audio. These files may be opened or converted to other formats using the software that are shipped along with the camcorder.
