MIM is a special encoding format that is used specifically for e-mail messages as well as attachments to email messages that includes 8-bit data or some other characters which are other than the standard US characters that are available in the US characters set. This encoding format supports traditional 8-bit content along with the normal 7-bit messages which are normally sent through e-mails.

The MIME files with the extension MIM usually appear as a part of email messages or they may also be seen as an entirely separate attachment. This encoding format is decoded automatically by popularly used email programs in order to show the meaning of email message that is understandable to the user and hence hides the encoding format from the user.
