MDX file is basically an index file that is associated with database files. It is commonly created with the DBF format file. Rational XDE by IBM (eXtended Development Environment) is a tool that is available in several versions including Visual Studio and Java uses MDX files. This file is saved in an XML format which can easily be navigated using XDEModelWalker utility which is included along with the Rational XDE application. These MDX files are essentially very similar to the MDL files that are created by the Rational Rose software by IBM.
