MAP files are also used by several game engines like the Half-Life engine for loading game maps. These game map files will have all the data necessary for the engine to load a scene and then overlay other important objects like weapons, characters, and other important things and apply the necessary physics on the things to ensure realism. Game maps can be built using the Valve Editor which is now known as Hammer. These files are saved in a human-readable plain text format. Hammer can also be used to create maps for several other games like Quake, Quake II and so on. Hammer version 4 and above saves the files in a new .VMF format. This is not a human readable format; however it is a better compressed format optimized for bigger maps. Hammer was earlier known as "Worldcraft" and later on it came to be known commonly as "Hammer." MAP files are also used by various GPS devices today for displaying various maps to the user.
