Source code is written in the Lua programming language, which is light-weight and is designed for the purpose of extending applications. The word "Lua" comes from a Portuguese word which stands for moon. LUA files can be used to customize some applications. The Adobe Lightroom's user interface is written using Lua. Lua was implemented and designed by Tecgraf, a lab in the Computer Science Department of Brazil's PUC-Rio, and is also freely available. It is pronounced LOO-ah.

Lua is also available to PlayStation Portable which runs with the Lua Player. The Lua Player runs the lua scripts and displays them over the Sony PSP screen. Lua which is an unofficial application for the Sony PSP is a homebrew application and it positively requires the firmware V1.5 or alternatively needs a specific firmware version which has the lua player for running the lua scripts
