This is the database file that is used by the iTunes application developed by Apple Incorporation for organizing the files within the iTunes Media Library. This file contains the entire list of the songs that are available in the iTunes media library on the local file system of the user. It also additionally contains the playlists that the user might have created, the user's song ratings, as well the user's comments for the various songs. However the Macintosh version of the iTunes does not use the file extension ITL as opposed to the Windows version. However both of these platforms, i.e. The Macintosh as well as the Windows save an additional file called the 'iTunes Music Library.xml' file which is an XML formatted file within the same directory as the ones mentioned above. This file allows for the files, the music as well as the users playlists to be available for the other applications other as well iTunes. In case the iTunes Library file gets deleted by any chance, the iTunes application will recreate the file by searching all the media content on the local file system of the user. However it should be noted that the playlists, the song ratings as well as the user comments will be lost and iTunes cannot recover these information in such an event.
