If Windows cannot find the appropriate program associated with .INS files, then your registry may have errors. Check your Windows registry for errors (includes file association errors).

This is used to locate the names and IP addresses of computers connected on the internet, commonly known as 'name resolution'. It helps to translate the IP address of a computer connected on the internet into its name. This information is then stored by the Windows Internet Naming Service for name resolution during communications between computers. This file is not supposed to be opened or edited manually. INS format files are also used for storing samples of instruments which is then used by the Ensoniq synthesizer application and sound cards. It typically contains the definition of one instrument and references to audio files which are used for producing the sounds of the instrument. These files are used by both the Windows and MacOS platforms although they are not compatible with each other.
