File Extension INI

File type: Configuration File

About the INI file type:

If Windows cannot find the appropriate program associated with .INI files, then your registry may have errors. Check your Windows registry for errors (includes file association errors).

INI files are used for storing configurations and settings that are used by windows applications. From Windows 95 onwards these files were replaced with the registry database although INI files are still used to store certain user specific information regularly by windows applications. These files are standard ASCII plain text files and can be opened or edited using any standard text based editors, although it is generally not recommended to edit these files manually. INI files are also used by the applications in the Symbian operating system just like those in the windows operating system to store application specific data and information for the user. These files, like their counterparts in windows, are standard AsCII plain text based files and can be opened even on the Symbian operating system using standard editors on the system. But users are not recommended to open and edit these files manually as it may make these applications to run incorrectly or in some cases it may cause the application to not run at all.
