About the HDMP file type:

If Windows cannot find the appropriate program associated with .HDMP files, then your registry may have errors. Check your Windows registry for errors (includes file association errors).

When a program running under Windows XP/Vista crashes, an uncompressed dump file is created which contains the details of the state of the program at the time it crashed along with other valuable system data that has been recorded at the time the error had occurred. These files are then compressed and saved as .MDMP (minidump) files and these can be sent to Microsoft to help them debug the errors in the code that had caused the crash. This file should not be opened by the user. To enable the error report to be sent to Microsoft, one can edit the registry settings at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting."
