About the HDD file type:

If Windows cannot find the appropriate program associated with .HDD files, then your registry may have errors. Check your Windows registry for errors (includes file association errors).

A virtual hard drive is a drive that is created on the physical hard drive using the help of special software. There are certain programs that permit Microsoft Windows and other operating systems to run on the Macintosh and for this a virtual hard drive is created by those programs. Parallels Desktop is one such program which creates a virtual hard drive on the main drive of a Macintosh computer. The data that is saved on the virtual drive can only be read by Parallels Desktop software. A virtual appliance can be created using any of these three .hdd extensions: `swap.hdd', `data.hdd' and app.hdd'. This extension is not self executable. Double clicking on it launches the program it is linked with (e.g.: Windows XP)
