The GZ file extension is used by several programs for file compression such as the Gzip Compressed Archive, Gnu Zip, 7-Zip and the WinZip. In particular, the GZ file extension is used by the Gnu Zip as a compression algorithm. Gnu Zip is a program identified with almost every file decompression program for different Operating Systems and is used for compression of files that have been already archived. The Gzip application on the other hand, uses the GZ file extension as a compressed archive file and it is used in conjunction with another file extension identified as TAR. The tarball extension refers to the archive which will subsequently be compressed using the program. The Gzip application has been closely associated with the 7-Zip program, an open-source software developed by Igor Pavlov. The 7-zip program is noted for its high compression ratio with its novel 7Z format. Its compression ratio is better than that provided by the more popular programs PKZip and WinZip. The 7-Zip program can be used on any computer and can support a number of formats. It also has the capability of self-extracting for the 7Z format.
