The GVP file extension is a file extension used by the Google Video Playlist. The program is an online video site where a user can look for and view various video productions such as TV shows, music videos, documentaries, movies and personal productions. The production chosen by the user may be free or purchased online and downloaded to the user's computer. The videos downloaded from the Google Video Player then use the GVP (Google Video Pointer) file extension as a pointer for these videos. The files with the GVP file extension are merely pointers to a Google Video File that can be found on Google servers. The videos that have been downloaded have with them an MP3 audio stream and are usually compressed using the MPEG-4 ASP format.

A play list downloaded from the Google Video Playlist also makes use of the GVP file extension. When the play list is run, a connection is subsequently made to a Google Video File where a movie file will be presented to the user. Other than the Google Video Player, the GVP file can also be opened through a text editor in order that the user may view the direct site of the file or URL. Once the GVP file finds the GVI file, the GVP file may now be downloaded and run using a media player. The downloaded flash-based movies use the FLV format. The files using the GVI format may be converted to an almost similar format known as Audio Video Interleave (AVI).
