The GVI file extension is used for the Google Video File. The Google Video File is a format used for video files created by Google. The program was primarily designed to resolve issues on compatibility on playlist format and video format. The GVI format files are accessed using the Google Video Player while the supported playlists use the GVI (Google Video Pointer) format. When the program is downloaded to the computer, the file produced is a small GVP pointer instead of the complete size gvi video file. The GVP pointer file acts as a link such that when executed, it points out and downloads the actual video file into the user's default directory.

Google Video provides an online video market that is open to all Web users. It provides users a website for searching, watching and even purchasing a wide range of movies, TV shows, documentaries, personal productions and music videos. A user who purchases and downloads a copy-protected video can only run the video using the Google Video Player. The user must likewise be online to allow the viewing of the copy-protected video. However, the Google video website had already stopped making the Google Video Player available since August of 2007; thus, removing the choice to have videos downloaded using the GVI format.
