The GPI file extension is used by several programs particularly Garmin. For this, the GPI file extension is used to save Point of Interest Files. The program uses the GPI file extension for the program's custom Points of Interest (POI) for the GPS receivers. These points of interests may include restaurants, post offices, hotels, emergency services, restaurants, museums or any place of interest. These Points of Interests are indicated by tiny icons on the displayed maps. The program has also created a special kind of POI known as the Garmin Tourguide.

The Garmin Tourguide site contains the files using the GPI file extension with important audio files on areas of interests throughout the world. The files also provide the user a proximity alert such that the file is automatically run whenever the user is near or reaches the POI. An associated MP3 file is also included with the TourGuide files. The garmin TourGuide POIs are presently in synch with Streetpilot ' c550, 2730, 2820, 7200 and 7500, n'vi' and z_mo'. The program can be downloaded from the website www.geotourguide.com and once downloaded, the user can now save it on the GPS receiver. Other programs using the GPI file extension are the Bitware and GNU Pascal. This file extension serves as a Fax File and an Interface file respectively.
