The GIF file extension is a file format that uses standard bit mapped graphics and is capable of supporting up to 256 levels of color. The GIF file format was introduced by the World Wide Web consortium in the latter part of the 80s. The image file that can be created may have up to 256 indexed colors and even with the GIF compression, the image created is never compromised; hence, maintaining the image's clarity. This ability to maintain the same degree of image quality is also called the lossless format. The color palette of the images may adapt to the image colors or may also be a predetermined group of colors. The GIF images can also be utilized to facilitate the display of standard animations on the Web because of its capacity of being made animated as well as being stored as animated GIFs. The images created with the GIF format also blends well with various color backgrounds primarily made possible because of the transparent pixels. However, the pixels in the GIF format should be completely transparent or completely opaque so that there will be no fading of the transparency.
