About the GID file type:
If Windows cannot find the appropriate program associated with .GID files, then your registry may have errors. Check your Windows registry for errors (includes file association errors).The GID file extension is appended to files created as hidden files by the application WinHelp every time the user opens a Help file or updates a Help file. The GID file extension is being utilized in Windows 95 as a configuration file. Whenever the user opens a Windows help file, the file is analyzed by the Help system and an associated GID file is created. With the GID file, help topics are indexed; thus, enabling a faster time for accessing help file topics. The file contains various pieces of information regarding the Help file such as all the filenames and titles of the Help files that can be found in the contents file. The contents file's binary representation after processing the file can also be seen in the hidden file. Other pieces of data found in the contents file are keywords used in the other Help files, Help Windows and dialog boxes' location and size and a record of the files with a full-text search index (FTS) files.

The files in the GID file extension can be deleted by the user without affecting the system. This will not however totally remove the file as the GID file will be recreated automatically by Windows the next time the corresponding help file is opened. Since it is automatically accessed and recreated, there is no need to access or recreate the file manually. The GID file extension is also used by other programs for different purposes. GiD uses it as a Project Directory file, FRAMES as a Global Input Data File and Windows as a Global Index File.
