The GI file extension is used by a number of applications. A program that most commonly uses the GI file extension is the Global Image. Global Image is a disk image formatting program that is produced by a number of disk creating software programs. The program is used to create duplicate copies of CDs and DVDs. It also facilitates the copying of information from a disc into the user's hard drive. It allows the conversion of all CD and DVD data into various formats such as ISO, Clone CD, Nero and BIN/CUE format.

The files with the GI file extension can be directly interpreted by the IsoBuster application. When the file is executed using the IsoBuster program, it allows files to be rescued from a damaged or bad CD, Blu Ray disc or DVD.
