How to Open GBA File on PC, Mac, iPhone & Android
A GBA file is a Game Boy Advance game image, and you open it with an emulator: mGBA on Windows, Mac or Linux, Delta on iPhone and iPad, or RetroArch on Android and almost everything else. All are free. The checker below tells you what's in a .gba file (title, region, save type, whether the header is valid) before you load it, which helps when a game shows a white screen or won't save. You can open GBA files legally when they're backups of cartridges you own or free homebrew games.

Open GBA File Online: Check Title, Region & Save Type (Free)
Drop a .gba file (or the .zip it came in) below. The checker reads the cartridge header and shows the internal title, game code and region, maker code, revision, whether the header checksum is valid, and which save chip the game expects (EEPROM, SRAM or Flash). It also recognizes Game Boy, Game Boy Color, NES and DS files with the wrong extension.
Good to know: this inspects the file; it doesn't play the game. Use an emulator from the guide below to play.

What is a GBA file?
A GBA file is a copy of the program data from a Nintendo Game Boy Advance cartridge, often called a ROM image. It contains the game's code, graphics and sound, plus a small header with the title and a game code, but not your saved progress, which an emulator keeps in a separate file. Game Boy Advance cartridges hold up to 32 MB, so .gba files are small by today's standards.
A .gba file doesn't open in Windows or macOS by itself: you need an emulator, a program that behaves like the console. Emulators themselves are legal software; what matters is where the game file comes from (see Is it legal?).
| Full name | Game Boy Advance ROM image |
|---|---|
| Header | Title at offset 0xA0, 4-letter game code at 0xAC (last letter = region), fixed byte 0x96 at 0xB2, checksum at 0xBD |
| Saves | Separate .sav file (EEPROM, SRAM or Flash, depending on the game) |
| Related | .gb / .gbc (Game Boy / Color), .nds (Nintendo DS), .sav (save data) |
How to open a GBA file: quick answer
| Device | Free emulator | How |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 / 10 | mGBA | File > Load ROM, pick the .gba |
| Mac | mGBA | File > Load ROM, or drag the file onto it |
| Linux | mGBA, RetroArch | Same as above |
| iPhone / iPad | Delta (App Store) | + button > Files, choose the .gba |
| Android | RetroArch (Google Play) | Load Core (mGBA) > Load Content |
Open GBA files on Windows, Mac and Linux
- Download mGBA from its official site, mgba.io. It's free and open source.
- Install or unzip it and open mGBA.
- Choose File > Load ROM… and select your .gba (zipped games usually load directly).
- Set up controls in Tools > Settings > Controllers; a USB or Bluetooth gamepad works too.
mGBA also plays Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. If you already use RetroArch for other consoles, load its mGBA core instead.
Play GBA files on iPhone, iPad and Android
- iPhone and iPad: Apple has allowed retro game emulators in the App Store since April 2024. Delta plays Game Boy Advance games (plus Game Boy, Game Boy Color, NES, SNES, N64 and DS). Save the .gba to Files, open Delta, tap + and choose it.
- Android: install RetroArch from Google Play, then Load Core > Download a Core > mGBA and Load Content to pick the .gba.
Avoid "free ROM" apps and sites that bundle games: they're a common source of adware and piracy. Emulators from official stores don't include games.
Save files and save problems
Your progress is stored next to the game as GameName.sav (in-game saves) and in save-state files created by the emulator. To keep a save when moving a game, copy the .sav with the same name as the .gba.
If a game says "save failed" or forgets progress, the emulator probably guessed the wrong save chip. The checker shows the save type the game's code asks for: set it manually in mGBA (Tools > Game overrides…) and restart the game.
Other GBA problems and fixes
White or black screen
The file is damaged, incomplete or not a GBA game at all. The checker flags an invalid header and files that are really Game Boy, NES or DS games.
"Invalid header" warning
Fan translations and hacks often have a modified header. Emulators usually run them anyway.
The download is a .7z, .rar or .zip
Extract it with 7-Zip or your system's archive tool (mGBA opens .zip directly). See our ZIP guide.
Game runs too fast or too slow
Check that fast-forward isn't on (mGBA: Tab key by default) and that audio/video sync is enabled in Settings.
Is it legal to open GBA files?
Emulators are legal. Game files are copyrighted: downloading games you don't own is typically illegal in the United States. Legal options are dumping your own cartridges with a cartridge reader, buying official re-releases (several GBA games are on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack), and free homebrew games made by independent developers. This isn't legal advice; laws vary by country.

Frequently asked questions
How do I open a GBA file?
Install a Game Boy Advance emulator and load the file: mGBA on Windows, Mac or Linux (File > Load ROM), Delta on iPhone and iPad, or RetroArch with the mGBA core on Android. GBA files are game images, so no regular program like a media player can open them.
What is the best GBA emulator?
mGBA is the most widely recommended for Windows, Mac and Linux: it's free, open source, accurate and also plays Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. On iPhone and iPad, Delta is the best-known App Store option; on Android, RetroArch with the mGBA core.
Can I play GBA files on iPhone?
Yes. Since Apple allowed retro game emulators in the App Store in April 2024, you can install Delta, which plays Game Boy Advance games. Save the .gba file to the Files app, open Delta, tap the plus button and select it.
Why does my GBA game show a white screen?
The file is usually damaged, incomplete or not a GBA game at all, for example a Game Boy, NES or DS file renamed to .gba. Drop it into the checker on this page to see what it really is and whether its header checksum is valid.
Why won't my GBA game save?
The emulator may be using the wrong save type. The checker shows which save chip the game expects (EEPROM, SRAM or Flash); set it manually in mGBA under Tools > Game overrides and restart the game. Keep the .sav file next to the .gba.
Is it legal to download GBA ROMs?
Emulators are legal, but downloading copies of games you don't own is typically illegal in the US. Legal options are backing up cartridges you own with a cartridge reader, official re-releases such as those on Nintendo Switch Online, and free homebrew games.
What is a .sav file next to my GBA game?
It's your in-game save data, which emulators store separately from the game file. Copy it along with the .gba, using the same file name, to keep your progress when moving to another device or emulator.
Can a GBA emulator play Game Boy Color games?
mGBA plays Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games, and Delta and RetroArch also support all three. The checker on this page tells you which system a file is really for.
How do I open a GBA file in a ZIP?
mGBA can usually load a zipped game directly. Otherwise extract the ZIP with your system's archive tool or 7-Zip and load the .gba inside. The checker on this page reads zipped game files too.
Can I play GBA files in a web browser?
Some websites run emulators in the browser, but they often host games illegally. A desktop or mobile emulator from an official source is safer, works offline and keeps your saves reliably.
