File Extension FFD

The FFD file extension is used in the identification of flat files. The flat files with the FFD file extension are data files wherein the contents could only be sequentially read. This had been more common during the early days of computing. These files are used with the programming language COBOL. The FFD file extension could be read by means of a simple text editor. They are plain text files that usually contain a single record per line or a physical record. Within the record is a single field which could be separated by what are called delimiters like commas or those with a fixed length. In the case of the latter, it may require padding in order to achieve the desired length. Extra formatting could be required so that delimiter collision could be avoided. No structural relationships exist between the records. Examples of flat files are /etc/group and /etc/passwd on Operating System that are Unix-like. Another example of the said file is an address and name list with fields that include the phone number, name and address.
