About the EXE file type:

If Windows cannot find the appropriate program associated with .EXE files, then your registry may have errors. Check your Windows registry for errors (includes file association errors).

The .EXE file extension identifies executable files on the various Microsoft operating systems (Windows and DOS) as well as the OS/2 operating system. Executable files are better known as programs and double clicking on the file should be enough to start running it.
