About the DIVX file type:
Invalid file associations could be the result of underlying issues within your Windows PC. It is highly recommended to scan your PC for invalid registry entries, unused processes and other slowdown issues. The DIVX file extension is identified with the encoded movie file created with the DivX codec. This file however should not be confused with the DIVX format which represents the Digital Video Express video introduced by Circuit City. The DivX codec represents a high compression, high quality video file used for the distribution of digital video files. This technology compresses the video file to a fraction of its original size and with very minimal quality loss that incorporates support for resolutions to a maximum of 1080 on High Definition devices. The support for the DIVX format file is explicitly certified on consumer electronics that can host the file type. DivX 6 is the latest edition of this technology to be released in the computer market by making its debut on June 15, 2005. This latest offering extends the coverage of the DivX technology by incorporating media container format support aside from its codec and player components. This new addition is referred to as DivX Media Format or DMF and maintains the DIVX file extension for identification. This new format also includes support for the DVD-Video and the VOB container media.

The DMF format supported by the DIVX file extension features the use of interactive menus, XSUB (multiple subtitles), multiple audio tracks, and multiple video streams. It also introduces Chapter points, XTAG (metadata type), and partial compatibility to older AVI video file formats. It also incorporates a DivX Ultra Certified profile which is required for every Ultra Certified Player in the market. The DIVX format file is encoded using the DivX codec but maintains the MPEG-4 based video stream and is widely analogous to other media container formats like the QuickTime developed by Apple Inc. Similar to the way that MPEG-2 video formats are specified by DVD standards, the DMF supported by the DIVX file extension specifies the MPEG-4 compatible video format. Despite the use of the DIVX file format, this video stream is still considered by the industry as an extension of the AVI video file standards due to its incorporation of multiple audio along with subtitle tracks by using the RIFF headers for data storage.
