The RenderWare Model File which uses the default DFF file extension format is used for saving a three-dimensional model made up of binary stream formats. This file type is mainly used in different CAD programs including 3D computer gaming like in the case of GTA3 (Grand Theft Auto 3), Madagascar, and Sonic Heroes among others. The DFF file format is organized in such a way that it hosts multiple sections used for describing the materials as well as the geometry used in generating the model. The application which generates this particular format file is considered as a middleware for computer applications and video games conceived by Criterion Software and finds broad usage in the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, Xbox, Wii, Gamecube, Mac OS, and Microsoft Windows platforms. RenderWare is considered as an API that caters to the 3D environment requisites including graphics rendering engines utilized in computer gaming, Active Worlds, and other VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) browsers.

The application supported by the DFF file extension was introduced at a period when software rendering for Personal Computer systems was mainly the responsibility of libraries like the Reality Lab (RenderMorphics) and the BRender (Argonaut). This was a time when Graphic Processing Units were not yet commercially introduced in the computer market. The principal commercial contribution attributed to the DFF file extension was its delivery of an off-the-shelf solution to the various problems associated with graphics programming under the PS2 platform. Because of this contribution, the technology earned the moniker of Sony's DirectX due to the toolchain and surrounding framework of the middleware. Prior to the release of the second version of this application, a separate scripting language was required to maximize the advantages provided by the technology. However, when RenderWare 2 hit the market, the need for an external scripting language was eliminated because it had its built-in version called RenderWare Script (RWX). The release of the next version of the application removed support for the RWX and focused on a binary model format file.
