The DBX file extension represents the electronic mail folders generated by the Microsoft Outlook Express software. Email message folders are actually not folders but more as files which store various messages sent and received by the user. Every specific mailbox used by Outlook Express corresponds to a single file that uses the DBX file extension. Take the case of the user's Inbox, the messages are stored in the file INBOX. DBX, for sent items it is the SENT ITEMS.DBX, and so on. To back up the contents of these folders, the user just needs to copy the DBX format file to another storage location and it can be opened directly from within the Outlook Express program. These file types however are not meant to be edite,d or opened manually because there is the danger of corrupting them and making the contents unusable. This can also translate to an erratic behavior of the Outlook Express software. For corrupted email folders, normally, the DBXtract application can repair damages and recover the stored messages. To search for the DBX format files that Outlook Express stores in the system, the Maintenance item under the Options category of the Tools Menu must be chosen.

The file FOLDERS.DBX on the other hand is used by Outlook Express as an index file for all the message folders including the newsgroups that the user accesses using the email application. The Outlook Express application supported by the DBX file extension is a bundled application for majority of the newer versions of the Microsoft Windows Operating System platform. This application must not be confused with the Microsoft Outlook application bundled with the Microsoft Office Productivity Suite which is also an email client. The Microsoft Outlook included in the Office Suite is a more advanced version of this email client and includes a calendaring feature. Outlook Express is considered as the most commonly used email client for the Window environment because it is ready to use out of the box. Another important DBX format file is the OFFLINE.DBX which stores the data for interactive access of the Hotmail and IMAP accounts available to the user. The POP3UIDL.DBX on the other hand stores the data associated with the messages left in the POP3 mail server utilized by the user.
