The CWK file extension represents a document produced by the ClarisWorks or AppleWorks productivity package. Actually, ClarisWorks adopted the name AppleWorks in 1998 when Claris Corporation was taken over by Apple Inc. Both of these products were released to the computer market with versions that can be deployed for both the Microsoft Windows and Macintosh Operating System environments. The last update released for AppleWorks came in 2004. This productivity suite was an integrated application package associated with the Apple II computer system platform and at one time was a bundled product for all consumer level computer systems introduced by Apple to the IT market. The product responsible for generating the CWK file extension at one point became the most popular program for the Macintosh platform with approximately more than 20 million active users. The productivity suite was composed mainly of a word processor, drawing, painting, spreadsheet, database, and terminal based communication applications. The ClarisWorks software was developed by Scott Holdaway and Bob Hearn which was eventually published by Claris, now known as FileMaker Inc.

Both AppleWorks and ClarisWorks, by default, use the CWK file extension until ClarisWorks was subsequently taken off the market by Apple. When AppleWorks reached its end-of-life status on August 15, 2007, the iWork suite was launched as its successor. ClariWorks was noted for integrating all its components into a seamless suite which functioned in concert. In this context, spreadsheet frames can be embedded by the user in a word processing document or incorporate formatted text in drawing files. There is a misconception that the CWK file extension generating application components were the product of MacDraw and MacWrite. However, the reality is that ClarisWorks was developed from scratch and underwent redesigning in order to match other Claris applications after the take over. The CWK file extension was initially seen in Macintosh systems in 1991 with the shipping of the ClarisWorks 1.0. Under the Microsoft Windows environment, the CWK format file production software made its debut in 1993 under the same version. AppleWorks version 5 was initially called ClarisWorks 5 prior to assuming the name of AppleWorks 5.
