The CRASH file extension is a file extension used as a CRASH report file by the OS X Crash Reporter by Apple, Inc. The program has similar features with that of the UNIX.PANIC file. The log file with the CRASH file extension is created whenever the Operating System encounters things that it has no capability to perform. The file created provides information on the condition and state of the computer at the time there was a system crash. One associated link with the CRASH file extension is the type of error called the 'kernel panic' that occurs in UNIX-style Operating Systems which include Mac OS X, AIX, A/UX and Mac OS Server. A kernel panic is a form of error whenever the Operating System's kernel (Core) becomes a recipient of an instruction with an unforeseen format or the system becomes unsuccessful in managing the format. This kernel panic can also be attributed to an incompatible hardware or more often an incompatible software application. When the CRASH file appears, its appearance will vary and will usually depend on the Mac OS x version being used by the user.
