The CHM file extension is also known as a Compiled Help Module and is the format used in Microsoft Help, the standard system for Help in the Microsoft Windows Operating System. Files in the .chm file extension are composed of collected HTML documents and various data like Java Script and images compressed into one file. These files have several powerful features that include the Index of Keywords, Full-text search functions and Index of keywords. This proprietary format was initially released in 1997 by Microsoft to replace the WinHelp format. It was first included in Windows 98 and is still distributed and supported with current platforms such as Windows Vista and Windows XP. However, in 2002, due to some security risks that Microsoft announced related to the CHM format, they decided not to further develop the format and will move to a new system for Windows Help.
