File Extension CHK

File type: Saved file fragment

About the CHK file type:

Invalid file associations could be the result of underlying issues within your Windows PC. It is highly recommended to scan your PC for invalid registry entries, unused processes and other slowdown issues.

The CHK file extension is an output from CHKDSK or SCANDISK. These are saved file fragments left after a cleaning by Scan Disk or Check Disk. The files with the .chk file extension are commonly stored in the FOUND folder after the system has performed a disk scan. These files are usually created after a program or when the Windows Operating System crashes. These were opened and not properly closed files. The proper procedure that the system follows is that when a user closes a file, the file location information is written in the right places. If a file was not closed properly, that info is lost and Windows cannot locate all portions of the file. When the user runs CHKDISK or SCANDISK, the parts are defined as lost file fragments and are transformed into files with the .chk file extension.

In the event that users have lost a big chunk of their file after a crash, they may run SCANDISK and recover data from the existing files with the CHK file extension. The files may also be deleted since the information has been relocated in the disk or may be checked with an application called CHK-Mate before being permanently removed. Keeping the disk fragmented is said to also give the advantage of having complete files instead of having lost file fragments.
