The .AVI file extension is a container file format for Multimedia files that was introduced by Microsoft in 1992. Although, due to its age, it is considered tehnologically outdated, it is still one of the most popular file formats for storing video images (alternatives include .MPEG and .MOV).

To open .AVI files you will need to install Windows Media Player. Other applications that will view .AVI files include Apple QuickTime Player amongst others.
