The AOL Johnson-Grace Compressed File is identified as the image format that uses the ART file extension for the America Online application. This format is described as a bitmap image format compressed to be used by the AOL program. However, due to its proprietary nature, it remains unrecognized by many image viewing applications. The format utilized by the AOL client program is capable of holding one still image which has been highly compressed with an algorithm developed originally by the Johnson-Grace Company. This company was eventually purchased by the AOL service to make the ART file extension solely owned by America Online.
